Yes, another DIY post!! One of my goals for this year is to make a bunch of beauty products at home, so this is my first attempt at that

I have thought about making my own lip balms (and other beauty products) many time, but somehow I was always scared to do it. I thought it would be hard to make – or that it was hard to get the ingredients. Well, I made a big "natural and healthy stuff" order and boy, was it easy to make this lip balm!

(Plus, if you're looking for an easy homemade Valentine's gift for your girlfriend or an additional little something for Mother's Day later this year, this is a great option!)

Ingredients

1 tbsp organic beeswax
1 tbsp organic sunflower oil
1 - 2 tsp organic calendula oil (almond oil works great, too)
5 drops essential oil (I use rose EO)
little chunk of red lipstick (around 1/4 inch – see notes below for alternatives!)

also: 1 tin*

* I re-use old lip balm tins or mini sample size jam jars

Directions

Fill a sauce pan with a few inches of water. Place a bowl in the water, being careful not to get in water inside the jar, and bring the water to a gentle boil.

Add all ingredients except for the oil to the bowl and stir frequently. When all ingredients are melted, stir well and turn off heat, but leave bowl in the water to keep warm. Stir in the essential oils. Remove from heat.

Pour the melted mixture into a tiny jar or tin (I used a cute little tin that was once a container for mini sweets). Set aside and allow to cool for a couple of hours so that it completely hardens and turns opaque.

And now you have a smooth lip balm with a hint of colour and a hint of sun protection!

TIPS & NOTES:
- This will make a medium to soft lip balm. If you prefer a firmer and longer lasting lip balm, you can add more beeswax, up to double the recommended amount. If you prefer a smoother and more oily lip balm, you can reduce the amount of beeswax.
- Instead of red lipstick, you can tint your lip balm using rose petal powder. You can either buy rose petal powder, or make it yourself from dried (untreated!) rose petals by grinding them very finely, using a coffee mill or a spice mill. Depending on the type of rose you're using, the colour might be less pink, and more red.
